SSCC-18 / NVE / EAN-18

Description of SSCC-18 / NVE / EAN-18

ActiveBarcode: SSCC-18 / NVE / EAN-18 The SSCC-18 (Serial Shipping Container Code) is a standardized 18-digit code used worldwide to uniquely identify shipping containers or logistics units such as pallets or cartons. It is based on the GS1 standard.

In German-speaking countries, the code is also referred to as the shipping unit number (Nummer der Versandeinheit, NVE).

In practice, this code is often referred to as EAN-18. However, this designation is incorrect, as EAN-18 is not an officially standardized term in the GS1 world.

This number uniquely identifies a shipping unit worldwide without overlap.
  • The first two digits are the application identifier of the GS1-128. (00) is fixed and stands for Serial Shipping Container Code, SSCC. You do not need to enter this AI in ActiveBarcode. It is generated automatically when you select these barcode types.
  • The first digit of the data field is the undefined packaging unit. Currently, this is a reserve digit and is always used as 3.
  • This is followed by the sender's base number (ILN = International Location Number), which is 7 digits long.
  • The following nine digits are the self-generated number. This sequential number is assigned by the sender and must be unique for each shipping unit.
  • The last digit is the check digit. ActiveBarcode calculates this automatically, so there is no need to calculate it yourself.
The SSCC-18 enables tracking in the supply chain, simplifies warehouse management, and increases efficiency in the transport and receipt of goods.
