Leitcode (Deutsche Post, DHL)

Description of Leitcode (Deutsche Post, DHL)

ActiveBarcode: Leitcode (Deutsche Post, DHL)The Leitcode (routing code) and Identcode (identification code) are used by Deutsche Post AG (DHL). Both codes together are used for the automatic distribution of freight shipments in freight mail centers. The barcodes on the shipments are automatically scanned in the freight centers. The barcode uses the symbology of the numeric Code 25 Interleaved, but with a differently calculated checksum.

The routing code contains information about the route of a freight shipment.

The following information is contained in this code:
  • Positions 1 to 5: Postal code.
Unencrypted display of the 5-digit postal code of the recipient's home address.
  • Positions 6 to 8: Street code.
This barcode is too small for the full street name. Therefore, a 3-digit code is assigned to each street name.
  • Positions 9 to 11: House number.
Unencrypted display of the house number (3 digits). For house numbers that are 4 digits long, additional street identifiers are used. For example, the house number range 0-999 has a different street identifier than the house number range 1000-1999.
  • Positions 12 to 13: Product code.
Among others, the following are in use: 00 Normal parcel, 33 Retoure, 40 Small parcel, 47 Return shipment (e.g., in case of incorrect address)
  • Position 14: Check digit.
