PZN, PZN8, PZN7 (Pharma-Zentral-Nummer)

Description of PZN, PZN8, PZN7 (Pharma-Zentral-Nummer)

ActiveBarcode: PZN, PZN8, PZN7 (Pharma-Zentral-Nummer)The PZN (Pharma Central Number) is used to uniquely identify a finished drug package by trademark, strength, dosage form, and package size.

The PZN is assigned by the Informationsstelle für Arzneispezialitäten GmbH, Beethovenstr. 51-53, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The PZN is based on Code 39. In addition to the code number itself, there is a check digit at the end. Valid characters are the numbers 0 to 9. The Code39 start character "*" in combination with the minus sign "-" is used as the PZN identifier. Only the character "*" is used as the stop character. However, these start and stop characters, as well as the letters PZN, are an integral part of the PZN and do not need to be entered when creating it. The letters are not encoded.

PZN7
The original PZN (now PZN7) has not been issued since 1 January 2013. From this date onwards, PZN8 will be used exclusively for issuing numbers. From 1 January 2020, PZN7 numbers will no longer be valid, and PZN8 numbers will be the only ones that can be used.

PZN8
The PZN8 replaced the old PZN on 1 January 2013. Thanks to the additional digit, it offers a larger number range.
