Description of EAN-14, GTIN-14
The EAN 14 is used to label commercial goods. Today, the EAN-14 is often represented by the EAN-128 symbol code. ActiveBarcode always uses the EAN-128 symbology. The ITF-14 code (also known as DUN-14) can also be used to represent the EAN-14. If you want to use this symbology with ActiveBarcode, select ITF-14.
The EAN-14 using the EAN-128 symbology is structured as follows:
- The first two digits are the application identifier of the EAN-128: (01) is a fixed part of this code. You do not enter this AI in ActiveBarcode. It is generated automatically.
- The first user data digit is the logistic variant or packaging indicator. This digit is assigned by the supplier of the goods and is always between 1 and 8. If this value is not specified, a 0 is entered.
- The following 12 digits represent the product code. This is usually the EAN-13 number without the check digit of the EAN-13, i.e. only the first 12 digits of the EAN-13.
- The last digit of the EAN-14 is the check digit. ActiveBarcode calculates this check digit automatically. You do not need to calculate the check digit yourself.
