ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)

Description of ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)

ActiveBarcode: ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier for continuously published works, such as magazines. The ISSN is similar to the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for books.

The ISSN consists of eight digits, divided into two groups of four by a hyphen. The hyphen has no significance in terms of the code itself. Its only purpose is to distinguish it visually from other codes. The first seven digits represent the actual ISSN number. The eighth digit is the check digit, calculated using the modulo 11 method.

To print a barcode for an ISSN, an EAN 13 code is used, which begins with a special combination of digits. An ISSN barcode is therefore a special form of the EAN-13 code. Unlike with ISBN or EAN codes, it is not possible to identify the manufacturer or publisher from the components of an ISSN number.
